Australian Awards Scholarships : Maritime Cadetships for Women in PNG

 Fully funded scholarships opportunities for girls and women in Papua New Guinea.  The Australian Awards Scholarships  for Maritime Cadetships for Women are now open. This is a in-country scholarships awarded to girls and women in PNG. Any inspiring girls and women in PNG can apply for this scholarship program.

About 

Australia Awards PNG, in partnership with shipping companies  Pacific Towing, Steamships, Consort Shipping and China  Navigation is offering scholarships for two types of maritime  cadetships for Papua New Guinean women commencing in  2023: Deck (Watch Deck) and Engine (Engine Room).

These cadetships include a four-year combination of scholarship  study at the PNG Maritime College in Madang and seafaring  experience to enable professional maritime qualifications.

Deck and Engine cadetships have two grades of qualifications:

  1. Certificate of Competency Class 4 (Deck or Engine). This qualification enables employment on near-coast vessels that sail around Papua New Guinea.
  2. Officer of the Watch (Deck or Engine). This qualification enables employment on international vessels that sail between countries.

Scholarship applications for study in 2023 are open.


Eligibility Requirements

  • meet PNG Maritime College entry conditions   
  • be a female citizen of Papua New Guinea and be residing in PNG at the time of application (please note that the scholarship is not open to men)  
  • have completed Grade 12 or matriculation upgrade (FODE/DODL) with a minimum grade B in Advanced Math and Literature (English), and grade C in Physics and Chemistry.
  • not have been convicted of a criminal offence
  • not have been terminated from a previous Australia Awards scholarship for misconduct
  • be able to swim 100 metres fully clothed (if selected, you will undertake a swimming test)
  • meet fitness and health requirements
  • demonstrate your commitment to a career in PNG’s maritime industry.
  • be able to distinguish colour (not colour blind).

NOTE: CTCS (UPNG open college) is not regarded as matriculation upgrade by the PNG Maritime College.

Cadetship phases

The maritime cadetship has three phases:

• Phase 1 is 28 to 44 weeks of scholarship study time at the

PNG Maritime College.

• Phase 2 is approximately 24 months of seafaring time  spent either in near-coastal or international waters.

Phase 3 is a final block of 44 weeks of  study at the PNG Maritime College.

Required supporting documents

You must submit the following documents with your application:

• One recent passport size ID photo with your name and signature on the back of the photo

(scanned/electronic copy is fine)

• Certified copy of your Grade 12 Higher School Certificate

• Certified copy of your most recent academic  certificate (FODE/CODE studies after Grade 12) (if applicable)

• Certified copy of your most recent academic transcript/s

• Certified copy of your passport bio page and/or NID card or birth certificate of photo id such as driver’s licence or School ID card or Staff IDcard

• One letter of reference from a community  leader (school principal, pastor, village head, employer).

Successful application

If you are offered a scholarship, you will need to:

• sign a contract and be bound by the scholarship conditions

• be accepted full-time into the cadetship identified in your scholarship offer for the duration of the award

• If necessary, live on-campus unaccompanied (no family)

• meet all other conditions of the scholarship  award.

Application Submission Instructions

This application form can be completed electronically as a PDF. But, you can only save the completed (or partially completed) application if your computer has Adobe Acrobat DC or the latest version of Adobe.

Otherwise, you can print off the application form and complete it by hand or complete the application form  electronically in one session and print the application before closing.

You may submit your application using any of the three methods below:

1. By email: You attach the application form (completed electronically or by hand) as a PDF email attachment (renamed with your name). Email your application to:

maritime@australiaawardspng.org

2. By post: You can send direct mail or courier your application to the Australia Awards address below. Application envelopes that are date stamped after the closing date or received 14 days after the closing date will not be considered eligible.

3. In person: You may also submit your application directly to Australia Office located at  Westpac Bank Building, Level 2.
