“I had other plans on what to do, but the passing of my late sister which shattered her dream of becoming a doctor, led to me to choose medicine,” he said at the University of PNG graduation in Port Moresby yesterday.
“Rebecca had been an outstanding student and I always look up to her for inspiration and motivation.
“In 2009, she was the grade 12 science dux at Mercy Secondary School in Wewak, East Sepik.
“I always look up to my late sister as my role model in maintaining excellent academic results.”
His mother Janet and niece Felicitas witnessed his big day.
He was going to do grade 7 when Rebecca died after a short illness.
She had just got her ticket to fly to UPNG for the science foundation.
Rodrick moved to Port Moresby in 2011 to compete grade 7 and 8 at Ted Diro Primary School.
He completed grade 12 at the Port Moresby National High School and in 2016 enrolled at UPNG.
Mum Janet thanked Rodrick for making the family proud.
“Rodrick is a humble and hardworking boy who stood by his words to make his sister’s dream a reality. We now have a doctor in the family,” she said.
