Western Pacific University Study Programs and Admission Requirements

Welcome to Study in Papua New Guinea and to study at Western Pacific University (WPU). The Western Pacific University  is a recently established university located in Ialibu district in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

The university took in first intakes of students in 2021.  This group of students are now  enrolled in the Foundation Year Program. This program is a compulsory course of study for students seeking entry to a Bachelor’s program at Western Pacific University. The aim is to provide students with the foundational academic knowledge and skills required to successfully complete further study via online, blended and face-to-face delivery.

  • The Western Pacific University will soon enroll international students (At the moment the university is open to domestic students)
  • Post Graduate courses are not offered at this stage. 
  • More course programs apart from the following will be added as the university major into fully operation university. 

Course Programs 

Certificate in Higher Education Foundation Studies (CHEFS)

This is a stand-alone program providing a pathway as a pre-requisite for students who wish to study at WPU and elsewhere in other Papua New Guinean Universities or abroad. The units studied under the CHEFS Program are tailor-made to suit the needs of students and equip them with  the relevant tools, mind-set and skill-set each individual student needs to be able to smoothly transition into their chosen field of study in their  newly introduced programs or the choice to apply to other tertiary institutions in the country. CHEFS also provides the opportunity for others  who would like to pursue a career or to enhance their professional skills in academic writing, computing skills, foundations in societal studies and learning in a digital world.

BSc in Computer Networks
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Networks is a degree program, where you will learn to develop and manage sophisticated computer network solutions. In addition to core computing skills, you'll learn the fundamentals of networks including flexibility, scalability, quality of service and the security implications of corporate infrastructures. Using state-of-the-art network devices in our
computer laboratories, you'll design and configure your own networks as well as explore the latest developments in communication  technologies. At WPU we use teaching programs and technologies of the well-known tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Cisco.

BSc in Computer Programming
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Programming gives you the opportunity to gain expert knowledge and start a career in the IT sector.
The aim of the program is to teach you the technical methodology and instruction involved in creating, testing and maintaining computer science  software programmes. Active student learning in the form of seminars, workshops and problem-based projects are designed to engage your  interest and enable you to become autonomous and continuous learners. Assessment methods include projects, reports, presentations and case  studies, as well as time-constrained in-class tests and exams.

BA in International Business Management

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Business Management gives you the mind-set, skills and experience you need to understand how global business operates. The overall aim of the program is to equip you with the management tools and leadership skills to start a career in any  international operating company in a range of industries including: consulting, retail and manufacturing or to plan and run companies on a global scale. You will develop competencies that will require you to respond proactively and creatively to contemporary business issues and face  challenges of the global business market. This degree also provides you with lifelong learning and working opportunities, available for those who  can operate with confidence in today's world.

The university aims to be the first paper-less educational institution in the country. All tutorials and exercises are conducted electronically using  computers, all assessments are submitted and evaluated electronically as well.

Entry Requirements at Western Pacific University

Course requirements:

A GPA of 2.9 and grade point of 'B' for all subjects. This applies to both school leavers and non-school leavers.

For non-school leavers other requirements include supporting documents such as recent police clearance, references from recent and reliable  referees, confirmation of recent employment, etc.

As a school-leaver:

You are able to apply to study at WPU through the National Online Selection System (NOSS). Your year coordinator will have spoken to you  about this system and created your National Online Application System student account. Please note that WPU will only accept school leaver applications through the National Online Selection System.

Opening and closing dates for school leaver applications will be announced by DHERST in due course.


As a non-school-leaver:

Please note that WPU will only accept non-school leaver applications through our online application portal. The portal is open for the whole  year, commencing on the 15th of February every year and closing on the 15th of February the following year.
