Perks of being a volunteer

By Catherine Geluwa

I can vividly recall November 24th, 2018 I walked down the aisle proudly feeling relived and thinking done and dusted as my mother warmly embarrassed me with tears of joy and the news echoed to families and friends and I was congratulated for finally completing my tertiary education.

Typical of all graduates I presume all the glitz and glam of working in the professional field after graduation, few weeks after returning home I had my work wear ready with high hopes of lending a job at ease. However things didn't come my way in the first two months I had sent out 35+ application with only two acknowledgement for the application sent and was not even shortlisted. Whilst doing all these I tend to realize that my CV had less experience so I ventured in to volunteer opportunities I choose organizations that are of interest to me. Volunteer role as led me to NGOs,CBOs,Social Enterprise which provided the opportunity to enhance my skills and the essence of it all is the networking opportunities I had during those times. Attending conference, meetings, fundraiser events, expos, awareness and advocacy programs has provided an outlet for me to connect and network with individuals. These platforms allowed me to build my CV I later received call backs from reputable organizations even though the stakes were high I was relieved that I got interviewed.

Amidst all the setbacks I met a senior officer from Simbu provincial Administration during one of my engagement he wore the uniform which had the Kondom Agundo logo that caught my eye without hesitation I smiled and approached him and introduced myself little did I know he was the Principal Advisor to Human Resource Management at Simbu provincial Administration I spoke about my qualifications and my passion for agriculture he later introduced me to the provincial Advisor of Agriculture at Simbu despite all the "Nos" and manoeuvering through different roles and the endless wait, the 10 minute conversation I had changed it and lend me the opportunity which I had applied and hope for. I was later recommended for a position with the Division of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

Therefore in life things may not come our way but learn to do things without a cost volunteering will offer you skills that can be used throughout your career development. The skills you build or advice you get from people will take you far.
