Papua New Guinea's Divine Word University (DWU) Bachelor of medicine and surgery (MBBS) students will reside within the Angau Memorial Hospital grounds in Lae, Morobe Province to do their trainings. This is as soon as an agreement to that effect is signed, the Morobe Provincial Health Authority says.
Provincial health authority chief executive officer Dr Kipas Binga said the authority will partner with the Divine Word University to construct a dormitory at Angau to accommodate medical students who will be engaged with the hospital for their clinical assessments. He said the PHA is looking at creating a clinical training hub for DWU medical students to have their clinical training on campus at Angau. “Currently, at Angau, there are a huge number of DWU medical students engaged with the hospital.
“So we (MoPHA) are now working on signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the school for students to come to Angau for their clinical assessment on campus,” Dr Binga said. “This (signing of MoU) will start off anytime this month. “Like the University of PNG has with the Taurama campus for medical students. “DWU medical students will come to Angau for their clinical assessment.” DWDU president, Professor Fr Philip Gibbs said the school is trying to secure funding for the dormitory project. Fr Philip said Angau is one of the largest hospitals in PNG and from all accounts, within the limitations of infrastructure and funding, it provides the best service possible to Morobe citizens, some people from the Highlands region as well as others from other regions. “So we expect our MBBS students to benefit from working in such an institution. “This is especially so for in terms of learning…by working alongside specialists in the field.
“Our students are doing clinical training at Angau and we plan for that to continue,” said Fr Philip.” He said a dormitory made available on site at Angau would be good for service at different times of the day. “We hope that the dormitory project will be completed in the coming year,” he added.
