Western Pacific University hopes to become PNG's Digital University

Papua New Guinea's WESTERN Pacific University (WPU) has entered into a new partnership with hopes of becoming the country’s digital university of choice through a new academic strengthening project.

In collaboration with the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) in Queensland, Australia, the project is the first of its kind and will see to the development of WPU staff’s professional teaching and learning capabilities.

It was announced earlier in June that the university’s bid for the project had been approved, meaning the university has access to K160,000 in order to carry out the project.

The official launch took place virtually on Friday, Sept 9, and was attended by eight WPU teaching staff who were project participants, along with two other colleagues, who met virtually with staff from USC.

This is an initiative of the Papua New Guinean–Australian partnership, funded by the Australian government through the Australian High Commission.

WPU president Dr Janet Rangou said at the launch said they now had a funding to build the professional capacity of WPU academics in teaching and learning in a digital space.

Rangou noted that there would be a twinning component that would go towards WPU’s divisional academic heads of departments and the institution.

“One of the key features of the project will be the ability for WPU to procure the Turnitin plagiarism software, which would enable webcast activities,” Rangou said.
