UPNG Wins University Debate Competition

 Divine Word University, host of the 2023 Intervarsity Debate Competition congratulates the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) Debate Team on being winners of the 2023 Intervarsity Debate Competition. 

University of Technology (UniTech) finished in second place, and in third place, was the host Debate team, Divine Word University. Six universities took part in the three-day event.

 

UPNG Wins University Debate Competition 

‘Developing a safe, innovative and sustainable life towards 2050, in Papua New Guinea’ was the theme for this year’s 2023 Intervarsity Debate Competition from 21st to the 23rd of September, 2023.

In the Debate Heats preliminary rounds, semi-final and grand final rounds, topics related to the theme, sparked interesting discussions, showcasing impressive research and analytical skills, including confidence and public speaking displayed by the participating university teams.

Officiating at the opening of the Debate competition, President of DWU, Professor Fr Philip Gibbs, highlighted on the importance of debate as being an integral part of university life because it draws on the strengths and characteristics that universities try to develop and to help students grow in expressing themselves verbally, thinking logically, and being able to communicate in a meaningful way.

DWU acknowledged teams that battled in the first and second elimination rounds respectively; Western Pacific University (WPU), Pacific Adventist University (PAU), Institute of Business Studies University and Divine Word University. 

“Everyone’s a winner. The quality of debating has been extraordinary. The topics have drawn out student’s imaginations and ability to debate on the different topics,” said Professor Fr Gibbs.

The Intervarsity Debate Shield was presented to the winning team including cash price amounting to K5000. Respective runner ups and participating universities also received respective cash prices and various consolation prices as a token of appreciation from the host university, DWU.  

Winning team, UPNG, will have the opportunity to take part in  a Global Debate Competition which will take place in South Africa, details of that late announcement will be clarified and processed in the coming weeks.

Teams are all looking forward to the next Intervarsity Debate Competition which will be hosted by the University of Papua New Guinea in 2024.
