From Grief to Greatness: Cyril Karaut’s Inspiring Journey to Academic Excellence at UPNG Medical School
When Cyril Karaut lost his father in his second year of university, his world changed forever. The grief could have overwhelmed him. Instead, it became the fuel that pushed him toward something greater. This week, the Pharmacy student from the School of Medicine and Health Science stood tall as the top graduate of his faculty—earning the highest GPA of 4.75 and receiving the Academic Excellence Award.
“For a while, I was lost,” Karaut shared. “My dad was the one who handled everything for me. When he passed, I had to grow up quickly. It was one of the hardest things I’ve been through, but it made me stronger.”

From Grief to Greatness: Cyril Karaut’s Inspiring Journey to Academic Excellence at UPNG Medical School |
Cyril was one of 334 graduates who celebrated their academic milestones on May 1, 2025, across 37 programs in the medical faculty. But his story stood out—not just for the GPA, but for the quiet determination behind it.
Growing up in both West and East New Britain, Karaut always had a quiet nature. That introversion, he said, became his strength. While others may have been distracted by the noise of campus life, he stayed focused, dedicating himself to study.
“Consistency is everything,” he said. “Even on days when I felt no motivation, I kept going. I’d tell myself, ‘Just do it.’ That simple mindset changed everything.”
Behind his academic success lies a strong family bond. Karaut credits his late father, his mother, and his two siblings for shaping his path. After his father’s death, their encouragement and belief in him became his lifeline.
“It wasn’t just me,” he said. “My family kept me grounded. Their support reminded me of what I was working for.”
Now, with his degree in hand, Karaut is setting his sights on a future in pharmacy. But he doesn’t plan to stop there—he hopes to eventually explore entrepreneurship and create opportunities for others, just as he was given.
To students facing their own battles, Karaut offers heartfelt advice: “Find what works for you. It may take time, and the road might be difficult, but if you stay consistent, you’ll see the results. Don’t give up.”
His story is a powerful reminder: even in the darkest moments, with perseverance and purpose, greatness can rise.
