PNG’s Western Pacific University Debate Team Shines in Intervarsity Grand Final

The Western Pacific University (WPU) debate team has brought pride to the institution after reaching the grand final of the 2025 Intervarsity Debate and finishing as runners-up on Thursday, 2nd October.

This year’s success represents WPU’s second appearance in the national competition and its best performance yet, marking an important milestone in the university’s five-year journey.

Led by team captain Kaylin Bunei, the talented group — Koani Guba, Idau Masere, Shaquille Kajoka, Aimee Ira, and Hazel Ikum — demonstrated remarkable teamwork and eloquence under the guidance of mentors Hardasha Kauron, Raylin Amai, and Elizabeth Matbob.

WPU management commended the team for their commitment and thanked the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) for hosting and winning the event. The university also acknowledged the other participating institutions for contributing to a vibrant and intellectually engaging competition.

A university representative said the result was more than just a win or loss, but a learning experience that showcased the academic and debating potential of WPU students. “To make the grand final in only our second outing shows the dedication of our students and the growing excellence of our institution,” the spokesperson said.

The university described the outcome as a proud moment for its staff, students, and the broader WPU community.

Quoting a local saying from Ialibu-Pangia, WPU ended its statement on a positive note: “still manda tembalgo” — everything is still okay — as it looks ahead to the next intervarsity debate in 2027.
