PNG Youth Wins Place to Study Aerospace Engineering Abroad
Papua New Guinea’s education sector is celebrating another achievement as young Eastern Highlands student Gideon Nero prepares to take up aerospace engineering studies at RMIT University in Australia. His selection under the Australia Awards PNG program places him among 10 high-achieving STEM students chosen for overseas study.
Nero previously attended the Port Moresby National School of Excellence and said aviation captured his imagination from an early age. The official announcement of the scholarship recipients was made at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby.

“I’ve always been fascinated with aircrafts, planes, helicopters, even rockets,” he said. “So, when I saw aerospace engineering, it was an easy choice. It’s something not offered here, and I’m really passionate about it.”
Currently enrolled at the PNG University of Technology, Nero will begin preparations before travelling next year. He admitted feeling both eager and anxious but said the chance to learn in a specialised field motivates him to succeed and eventually support PNG’s growth.
He also reflected on the struggles of being raised by a single parent and encouraged students facing the same hurdles to remain persistent. “Gideon's story shows how hard work and belief can turn big dreams into reality.”
