U.S. Fulbright Scholarship Program for Papua New Guineans

The U.S. Embassy has opened applications for the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Program for citizens of Papua New Guinea. This prestigious and fully funded scholarship supports up to two years of postgraduate study in the United States.

Late applications will not be accepted. Only online applications are allowed.

About the Fulbright Program

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of Papua New Guinea and currently residing in PNG
  • Hold a four-year bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance
  • Minimum of two years professional work experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and community involvement
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Three letters of recommendation (two academic, one professional preferred)
  • Submission of Personal Statement and Study/Research Objectives essays
  • Commitment to return to Papua New Guinea after completion
  • Preference given to applicants with limited or no recent U.S. experience

Ineligible Applicants

  • Applicants without a completed bachelor’s degree
  • Dual U.S. and Papua New Guinea citizens
  • Applicants with immediate family members who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Applicants with pending immigration applications
  • Employees of U.S. government agencies

Program Conditions

  • No dependents: The scholarship supports the recipient only
  • J-Visa requirement: Scholars must return to PNG for at least two years after completing the program
