The students began assembling from as early as 6:00am before proceeding on their annual Walk of Remembrance, a solemn event held to mark the day and reflect on the life and leadership of the late statesman.

The walk drew participation from students across faculties, many carrying messages of unity and respect as they moved together in remembrance of the leader who guided the country to independence.

Student representatives from the four regions delivered speeches that revisited the nation’s history and highlighted Sir Michael’s vision, leadership, and aspirations for Papua New Guinea.

Speakers reflected on the values of nationhood, cultural identity, and unity that Sir Michael championed throughout his political journey, noting that his legacy continues to inspire young Papua New Guineans.

The event was organised by the Student Representative Senate (SRS), which coordinated the program and encouraged students to take part in the commemorative walk.

Organisers said the Walk of Remembrance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and leadership that shaped the country’s independence and future.
