A student beauty queen says agriculture cultivates self-reliance and we must promote it. Miss Naomi Hanalei Alickson who was crowned Miss Madang 2021 gave the following account.
A week ago I represented my sponsor Divine Word University and was crowned Miss Madang 2021 during the Mr and Miss Madang Pageant 2021 at Madang Resort Hotel.
During my slogan presentation I advocated on Agriculture as my topic under the theme 'Promoting Self-Reliance Through Tourism' with my slogan titled 'Agriculture Cultivates Self-Reliance'. If you really think about it, agriculture does cultivate self-reliance.

When we see garden and farms we are looking at ancestral knowledge that has been sustaining families for generations. We are interacting with knowledge and practices that promotes self-reliance and sustainability.
Agriculture has been the backbone of this nation for many decades and it has provided many opportunities for our citizens. However, there is a gap in the market in terms of promoting our produce and in order to fill this gap both industries; Agriculture and Tourism must work together. By doing this, it of course promotes our produce boosting the farmer's self-reliance thus benefitting both industries, the nation's economy and the local communities.

Having an industry that is performing fine is okay but having an industry that is sustainable whilst contributing well to the economy is even better.
If we want the industry to thrive we need to invest more than the bare minimum. Investing in a practice that has been used by our fore-fathers to sustain themselves for many generations promotes our heritage. This is us Papua New Guineans depending on our gardens and farms. This is giving power back to our people, value to our land and honor to a sustainable practice. This is self-reliance.
