A young Papua New Guinean girl, PHILOMINA Yomini Polu always had a dream of becoming a plant molecular geneticist. She will now able to fulfil that dream after she became the third, and only female, Chevening scholarship recipient from Papua New Guinea in 2021. Ms. Polu will soon depart for the United Kingdom (UK) to study for a master of science in plant genetics and crop improvement at the University of East Anglia in England. “Chevening is a prestigious scholarship, very competitive and being able to have made it this far is a sign of commitment and determination,” she said in a statement on the British High Commission Facebook page.

Tamarua will study for a master’s degree in international economic law at the University of Warwick. “Post-graduate study was always on my radar, I just needed to find the right timing and the perfect opportunity,” he said. “Chevening offered the perfect opportunity and it could not have come at a more opportune stage in my career. I am excited to delve deeper into my specialised masters of law programme, soak up all the knowledge and experience I can, and return and catalyse positive development outcomes for PNG. “The thought of spending a year of my life in the UK is also quite exciting and I intend on making the most of my experience.” Applications for 2022/2023 are now open for Papua New Guineans.
