The new male dormitory, named after Fr. Frank Mihalic, was officially opened on the 3rd of February, 2022 at the Divine Word University Campus in Papua New Guinea.
The 73-bed dormitory was built from a 2019 grant by the Government of Papua New Guinea. This was made possible by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) through its Public Investment Program (PIP). The total cost of the construction was K2 million. DWU President Fr. Professor Philip Gibbs SVD also appreciated the funding given.
Mr. Kevin Murray, Chairman of the Diwai Enterprise Limited (DEL) Board officiated at the Opening. He said, “DHERST has provided funding for a number of projects in the past, and one of them was also opened late last year,” said Mr. Murray. He thanked DHERST for their continuous support and good relationship. He also thanked the DEL Building and Maintenance team for their great workmanship.
The name of the new male dormitory was inspired by Fr. Frank Mihalic's life, which was one of hope, dreams, and endless possibilities.
He was a priest, publisher, propagandist, linguist, lecturer, former staff of DWU, and author of several books. His book on PNG Mission History is a treasure trove of information and inspiration. Today he is widely known for the Tok Pisin Dictionary, and for founding Wantok Niuspepa.
