Papua New Guinea MANUS Governor Charlie Benjamin says parents cannot afford to send their children to tertiary institutions because tuition fees have increased significantly.
Benjamin, speaking in Parliament yesterday, voiced the concern shared by many parents and students around the country regarding the high cost of tertiary education.

PNG Prime Minister James Marape, in response, said the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology would be looking into how the higher education loan programme (Help) could be administered to assist students in this area.
Benjamin said school fees ranged from K10,000 to K20,000 a year was out of the reach for most Papua New Guinean parents.
He said if the Ombudsman Commission was to close the accounts before the elections, provincial governments would not have any way of helping students.
Marape said they would discuss with university councils and college administrations to ease the pressure on parents.
