PNG University of Technology - CPA partner to provide Accredit Business Studies Courses

Certified Practising Accountants Papua New Guinea (CPA PNG) has agreed to partner with the PNG University of Technology’s Business Studies Department to work towards full accreditation of its courses.

The involvement of CPA PNG follows a meeting between the University’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Ora Renagi and prominent Unitech Alumni and Chairman of the Engineering Industry Advisory Board, Mr. Luke Liria, President of the Certified Practising Accountants (CPA), Mr. Richard Kuna, and CPA CEO, Mr Yuwak Tau in Port Moresby recently.

As part of the strategy, a Business Studies Advisory Board will be set up to guide the accreditation of the courses.

Dr. Renagi said the Advisory Board will be responsible to set the agenda of the accreditation process and CPA PNG will provide an Assessor who will review the current programs and make recommendations that will form the basis of the accreditation work-plan.

Dr. Ora Renagi said the University’s aim is to deliver programs that will meet international and industry standards and accreditation of its courses is the way forward.

“The Engineering School is already in the process of being fully accredited. All Unitech courses will be accredited or benchmarked to international or industry standards. The Business Studies Department will be the second school to have its programs undergo full accreditation with the guidance and direction of CPA PNG,” he said.

“CPA PNG has its own accreditation process and with the recommendations by the Assessor on the accreditation work-plan, Business Studies courses will soon commence the process of accreditation,” Dr. Renagi added.

“The desire to accredit all programs started two to three years ago, but we couldn’t find the right agent to facilitate the process. Now that CPA PNG has come on board to take lead, the preparations for accrediting the programs are now underway.”

The initiative to identify qualified agents to accredit the business courses was led by Mr. Liria who developed strong connections with CPA PNG Authorities and managed to secure key individuals from the accounting firms and business community to partner and support the accreditation program.
