She applied for an Australia Awards PNG scholarship to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Education - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Through her course, Rachel learnt about Special Inclusive Education, techniques for teaching able-bodied and special needs children in the same classroom.
She had already identified overcrowded classrooms as an issue affecting student performance and realized these techniques could help address her challenges. Her training equipped her to recognize underperforming students, many of whom had suffered trauma, peer and societal pressure or had a disability.
Convinced that learning extends beyond the classroom, Rachel uses her lunchbreaks to mentor her students. “The life of a student will centre around the teacher. How you walk, talk, smile, scold, and teach will all influence who your students become. You give shape to the future you want to see.”
Applications for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (STEM) are currently open until 8 August 2022. Visit the Australia Awards PNG website or email incountry@australiaawardspng.org for information on how to apply.
