MATHESON LIBRARY

Matheson Library located at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology , named after the first Chancellor of the University, which was founded in 1967.

It has a current book stock of 130,000 volumes and receives 600 periodical titles. It is the only library in the university serving some 250 academic staff and 3,000 full time students taking a range of degree, diploma and certificate courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, Communication Engineering, Business Studies, Architecture and Building, Surveying and Land Studies, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Applied Sciences, Applied Physics, Forestry, Agriculture and Communication and Development Studies.


The library system is automated and it operates 7 days a week with limited operation during weekends. The library seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and highly experienced person to immediately fill the following vacancy.


UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

The University Librarian is responsible for the overall management and development of library services, collections, budget and staff. The University is concerned that it gains access to the information superhighway and its new Librarian will be expected to accelerate this process.

Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Efficient Information Literacy and Accessibility.

- Ensure that Students and Staff have access to library resources effectively and resourcefully and at the same time students and staff are well inducted on the library operations.

2. Well Maintained Accessibility Resources Center.

- All electronic accessibility equipment, books and journals are readily available for staff and students. All library books and journals are acquired on time for students and staff.

3. Academic Success for Students and Staff.

- To maintain continuous flow of information between academic departments and students required for research and study.

4. Research Impact.

- Ensuring all PNGUoT research articles and papers are well preserved.

5. Sustain and uphold University’s wellbeing and Identity through effective Clients Service by:

- Maintaining a decent professional relationship with other libraries in the country and overseas for inter-library loan purposes.

6. Capacity development of fellow colleagues

- Continuously mentoring of library staff skills and knowledge to be able to better serve staff, students and other clients.

7. Actively participate in Policy development for the library.

Qualifications & Experience

A relevant master’s degree and an internationally recognized professional qualification in librarianship.

Required to have experience working in academic or research libraries and operational concepts involved in the delivery of users and bibliographic services and library automation.

Must be able to manage emerging trends in academic libraries especially those resulting from electronic access to information.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, business skills and good interpersonal skills

Conditions of Service

  • Base Salary Range : PGK 91,201 - PGK 111,468 per annum
  • Base IMA Range : PGK 94,103 - PGK 140,717 per annum
  • IMA = International Market Allowance

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

Initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on a fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK1,000.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of PGK1,700.00 for single & PGK3,600.00 for accompanied plus PGK200.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor's office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
