STUDENTS taking construction management courses at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology have been urged to sign up with the PNG Institute of Builders (PNGIOB).
PNGIOB interim president Joe Willie recently urged the students during a presentation to sign up with the institute for future benefits.
“It is important for the building graduates to have a form of continuing professional support, once leaving the university and taking up employment in the construction industry,” he said.
“It is similar to architects and engineers, where they could not practice on a professional basis unless they were registered by the relevant institution.
“The building degree course was accredited by an international body, to enable the graduates to be recognised as professionals not only in PNG but in the wider Asia-Pacific area.”
Willie said the university staff accredited the building degree through the Australian Institute of Building, which the institute’s constitution was approved in 1997.
He said the institute would support graduates like contract administrators, quantity surveyors, project supervisors, project managers and construction managers in the construction industry.
“Students are taught about Australia and New Zealand standards here at the university,” he said.
“Those students would understand and know how to comply with the system and by having them register with the institutes, they would know how to regulate the policy.”
Willie was referring to the foreign contractors and construction companies in operation in Papua New Guinea without being properly checked and regulated to operate.
“PNG doesn’t have a regulator that would regulate the quality of their work,” he said.
“We want the Government and the Department of Works and Highways to recognise us, so we can set up an office to regulate professionally and legally.
“Foreign companies are coming in and not following standards.
