Papua New Guinea Government Invests Over K500 Million in Higher Education Programs

 Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - The Papua New Guinea Government has allocated over K500 million to support tertiary education since 2020, according to Higher Education Minister Don Polye. This funding is divided between the Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (Tesas) and the Higher Education Loan Programme (Help).

Breaking Down the Investment

  • Tesas has received a total of K304 million since its inception, benefiting over 76,000 students.
  • The program provided K83 million this year alone, supporting nearly 20,000 students.
  • The Help program, launched in 2020, has distributed K228 million across 58 institutions, with over 35,000 students receiving financial aid.
  • This year, Help received K50 million to support nearly 15,000 students.
  • Focus on Transparency and Repayment

Minister Polye emphasized efforts to improve program efficiency and transparency. Regulations for both Tesas and Help are being finalized.

Help loan repayments have not yet begun as the government establishes a repayment system.

While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure development, Polye highlighted the government's commitment to prioritizing initiatives that enhance the skills of Papua New Guinea's population.
