Papua New Guinea University of Technology Restructures Academic Framework

Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has reorganized its academic structure to align with the PNGUoT Strategic Plan 2020-2024, facilitating future expansion.

The restructuring involves grouping related departments into five faculties, each overseen by a Dean. The Postgraduate School has been renamed the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, Research, and Innovation, and the departments have been reclassified as Schools, each led by a Head of School (HoS).

This significant restructuring received official approval from the Council during its 200th meeting on November 20, 2023, and has been in effect since January 2024. Under the new organization, Heads of Schools will report to the Dean. In the absence of an appointed Dean, the Heads of Schools within the faculties will report directly to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic, instead of the Vice-Chancellor.

The faculties include:

  1. Faculty of Engineering: Comprising the School of Civil Engineering, School of Electrical and Communication Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, and School of Mining Engineering.
  2. Faculty of Sciences: Including the School of Applied Physics, School of Applied Sciences, and School of Mathematics and Computer Science.
  3. Faculty of Natural Resources: Encompassing the School of Agriculture and School of Forestry.
  4. Faculty of Humanities: Featuring the School of Business Studies and School of Communication and Development Studies.
  5. Faculty of Built Environment: Consisting of the School of Architecture and Construction Management and School of Surveying and Land Studies.
  6. Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, Research, and Innovation: Responsible for all postgraduate studies, research, and innovation matters.

The Faculty Dean is tasked with providing strategic guidance, leading academic planning, and overseeing administration to ensure excellence in teaching and research. Meanwhile, the Head of School manages academic operations, supports faculty and staff, collaborates with other Heads of Schools within the faculty, and oversees community outreach programs.
