This achievement represents a significant advancement for the university and its engineering graduates, offering enhanced career prospects. Graduates from the accredited programs will now be recognized globally without the need for further qualification assessments. Additionally, they will be granted complimentary graduate membership with Engineers Australia and an expedited process for achieving full membership, leading to worldwide acknowledgment as professional engineers.

Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi expressed his pride in the achievement, emphasizing the collective effort of PNGUoT’s faculty, staff, and students. He particularly thanked the Dean of Engineering, Heads of the four engineering departments, and all those involved in securing this important milestone.

The programs that have received full accreditation include Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Mining Engineering (Honours), and Bachelor of Mineral Processing Engineering (Honours). These qualifications are now recognized in several countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and other Washington Accord signatories, which opens up extensive opportunities for further education and employment abroad.

This milestone underscores PNGUoT's commitment to providing high-quality, internationally recognized engineering education. The university embarked on the accreditation process in 2017 with the goal of aligning its programs with global standards. This initiative was supported by the PNGUoT Industry Advisory Board, which includes leaders from key companies such as Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited, ExxonMobil, and Ok Tedi Mining Limited.

In 2019, the university’s engineering programs received provisional accreditation, meeting Engineers Australia’s Stage 1 Competency Standards and the PNG National Qualifications Framework (PNGNQF) level 8.

Professor Renagi also acknowledged the contributions of former Deans of the Engineering Faculty, including the late Professor John Pumwa, Dr. Moses Kavi, and Dr. Gabriel Arpa, who played instrumental roles in the development of the accreditation programs. Dr. Shoeb Syed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, highlighted that maintaining accreditation requires ongoing collaboration with industry stakeholders and continuous improvement. He also noted that the conditions linked to the accreditation will be resolved by May 2025.

PNGUoT will undergo another review in 2029 to maintain its accreditation status. The university extends its thanks to the industry, government, and alumni for their support throughout this process.

Looking ahead, PNGUoT remains dedicated to providing its students with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed on a global scale. This achievement further establishes PNGUoT as one of the leading higher education institutions in Papua New Guinea and strengthens its commitment to equipping graduates with the skills required to thrive in the competitive engineering field worldwide.

PNGUoT looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence in engineering education and extends its best wishes for the New Year to all those who have contributed to this significant accomplishment.
