Gobe Scholar Lorraine Kari Honoured with Dean’s Award at UPNG Graduation

Lorraine Kari, a young woman from the Gobe area in Southern Highlands Province, has been awarded the prestigious Dean’s Award during the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) 70th graduation ceremony. Her outstanding academic performance earned her the second highest GPA of 4.54 in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, making her the top-performing female in her graduating class.

Originally from the Mendi-Munihu and Kagua-Erave districts, Lorraine’s education was made possible through sponsorship from Petroleum Resources Gobe (PRG), a subsidiary of the Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC). The financial assistance provided by PRG helped her focus on her studies during her final year at UPNG, contributing significantly to her academic success.

Lorraine expressed heartfelt gratitude to her parents, attributing her achievements to their unwavering support and sacrifices. She also extended her thanks to her extended family and friends who stood by her throughout her academic journey. She acknowledged that the path to success was challenging, requiring intense dedication, effective time management, and strong personal discipline.

Currently, Lorraine is undertaking her residency with the Department of Health as part of the requirement to become a licensed pharmacist. She plans to further her studies after completing the program and hopes to return home to contribute to improving healthcare services in the Southern Highlands, particularly for communities with limited access.

Reflecting on the hardships faced during her studies, Lorraine admitted that balancing academic demands and personal responsibilities was difficult. However, she believes the struggles shaped her into a more resilient and disciplined individual. She described receiving the Dean’s Award as a humbling and rewarding experience that validated the sacrifices she made.

Lorraine also praised the MRDC’s Education Subsidy Program, noting its critical role in easing financial burdens for students from resource project areas. She highlighted the importance of such initiatives in empowering young people and opening opportunities in underprivileged communities. Lorraine was among 24 UPNG students who received support from this program in 2023, which has assisted more than 8,800 students since 2022.
