Breaking Waves, Breaking Barriers by PNG Women
Two of Papua New Guinea’s most inspiring women, Jamie-lee Baim and Lylellah Kunai, are once again making history as they prepare to study in Australia to become Chief Mate/Class I certified officers. These trailblazers are continuing to rise in an industry where women remain a rarity.
Both women began their journey through the Australia Awards In-PNG Maritime Cadetships and were among the first female cadets to graduate from PNG Maritime College. Since 2021, they’ve been navigating international waters with strength and confidence, proving they belong on the bridge.
Now, as part of a pioneering pilot program, they’re heading to the Australian Maritime College to gain top-level maritime qualifications. Their time abroad will bring new knowledge, global connections, and leadership tools.
With every wave they conquer, Jamie-lee and Lylellah are shaping a future where women lead in PNG’s maritime sector. They’re not just sailing forward—they’re pulling others with them.
