PNG University of Technology Focuses on Building Research Capacity

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has launched a week-long training to help its academic staff develop strong research proposals capable of attracting funding from national and international agencies.

Held at the Huon Gulf Hotel in Lae, the program began on Monday, October 13, and will end on Friday, October 17. It involves 26 academics—two from each of the 13 schools within the university—who are learning to prepare competitive project proposals.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Garry Sali, said the training was essential for the institution’s long-term research goals outlined in its 2025–2029 strategic plan. “This is an important training because our strategic plan talks about research training for academics,” he said.

He noted that while the university has set aside K1 million for research, the amount falls short of the financial requirements for major scientific work. “If we are talking about research with labs and other things, it will cost more than that,” Professor Sali explained.

He emphasised the importance of seeking funding opportunities beyond the university. “Both in PNG and abroad, there are international organisations and agencies that we can submit proposals to for funding,” he said.

The training includes lectures from experts at the PNG Science and Technology Secretariat and the Department of National Planning and Monitoring to guide participants in preparing professional and fundable research proposals.
