AI hub puts PNG's Western Pacific University on global learning stage
Papua New Guinea's Western Pacific University has taken another step towards digital learning with the opening of a new AI-enabled Digital Knowledge Hub in Ialibu, a development former Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says will help students access the same educational resources as their counterparts overseas.
Speaking at the launch, Mr O'Neill said the investment reflects the university's ambition to deliver world-class education from the Highlands, giving students the tools to compete globally regardless of where they come from.

According to Mr O'Neill, the opening of the facility marks a shift in how higher education can be delivered in PNG, particularly for students living outside the country's major urban centres.
He said many Papua New Guineans had previously faced limited opportunities because of where they were born, but technology is helping remove those barriers by providing direct access to global knowledge.
Mr O'Neill said students studying at Western Pacific University can now tap into information available to learners in cities such as Sydney, Singapore and London while also making use of artificial intelligence to deepen their understanding and accelerate their studies.
He described the university as an example of how quality education can be developed within PNG rather than relying on overseas institutions. He also noted that the university attracts students from around the country and across the Pacific, supported by modern facilities and a learning environment that encourages academic success.
Mr O'Neill thanked Higher Education Minister Kinoka Feo, who joined the launch via live video, along with the university's management, staff and the people of Ialibu-Pangia for their support in developing the institution. He also announced his commitment to expanding digital learning support to every school in the electorate, while revealing that every student and teacher at WPU received a tablet during the launch.
"Today EVERY student and teacher was issued with a tablet. The tools are now in your hands. Be curious. Be ambitious. The new facilities are truly world class and I look forward to hearing how it benefits your studies."
"Distance no longer decides destiny."
"Very proud of the WPU team for saying little and doing a lot. You are a shining example of a Wok Mas Go Yet team. Keep up the great work."
