SILAG Takes Online Learning to PNG Regions
PNG professionals pursuing leadership and governance training can now study without leaving their home regions, following the launch of online classes at the Somare Institute of Leadership & Governance (SILAG) Regional Training Centres.
The new learning arrangement was introduced through the Northern Regional Training Centre in Madang, where 18 participants enrolled in the 2026 Certificate in Human Resource Management (CHRM) online programme. Eleven participants joined from Madang, while others connected from Goroka and Mt Hagen for their first interactive Zoom class on August 19.
The programme is being coordinated by Ms Nellie Arabagali and follows an induction programme conducted from August 12 to 14.
During the induction, SILAG Online Coordinator Mrs Mary Konobo guided participants through the institution's Moodle Learning Management System, which will serve as the main platform for accessing course materials and completing academic activities.
The new approach is intended to make professional training more accessible to workers who face the cost and inconvenience of travelling to major centres for classes.
Through Moodle and Zoom, participants can access learning materials and communicate with trainers without having to relocate for their studies.
Mrs Konobo said the programme would give participants greater flexibility while widening their access to learning opportunities.
"SILAG is giving our participants the freedom to study from anywhere, set their own schedules and pick up from a massive global choice of courses without needing to travel or move around," she said.
She said the online system could also ease the financial burden associated with transport, accommodation and campus-related expenses.
Participants will also be encouraged to strengthen their computer skills as part of the programme, supporting SILAG's push to improve digital capability among the workforce.
Mrs Konobo said the broader objective was to make the institution more accessible to professionals across the country.
The initiative begins with the 18 participants in Madang and is expected to provide a model for expanding SILAG's online training services through its regional centres.
"We want to bring SILAG closer to you," Mrs Konobo said.
