Ninety-nine students have graduated from the University of Goroka's distance education programmes in Madang, following the institution's inaugural Institute of Distance and Flexible Learning graduation ceremony at the Holy Spirit Cathedral Hall.

The ceremony celebrated students who completed qualifications in education, business, accounting, tourism and hospitality, reflecting the university's efforts to widen access to higher education beyond its main campus.

The graduation was held under a theme focused on empowering distance education to shape Papua New Guinea's development over the next 50 years.

Among the qualifications awarded were the Bachelor of Education (In-Service) in School Management, Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Diploma in Business Accounting, Diploma in Business Management and Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

UOG Pro Vice Chancellor Academic, Research and Innovation Dr Mathew Landu challenged the graduates to apply their knowledge and skills towards transforming the country's education system.

Dr Landu said the university continued to strengthen the quality of its academic programmes by adhering to Measurement Services Standards and other international regulatory requirements governing educational institutions.

University of Goroka Council delegate John Sari said the graduation demonstrated the value of cooperation between educational institutions, provincial authorities and other stakeholders in expanding opportunities for professional development.

He thanked the Madang Provincial Government and administration for supporting the delivery of programmes, particularly those aimed at developing teachers and improving access to education within the province.

Sari also acknowledged the financial assistance arrangements made possible through the partnership, which help students pursue their academic qualifications.

The Institute of Distance and Flexible Learning was established nine years ago by UOG, while a formal Memorandum of Agreement with the Madang Provincial Administration was signed in May this year.

The university has established 17 IDFL centres nationwide and intends to expand its distance education network to more provinces to reach additional students.
