Late Justice Kirriwom recognized with Distinguished Award by Divine Word University

Statement by Divine Word University 

 Congratulations to Captain James Makop and the Late Justice Nicholas Kirriwom CMG, who are our distinguished alumni of 2021!


The Awards Ceremony took place on the 20th of August at the Sir Peter Barter Auditorium inside the DWU main campus in Madang.

Late Justice Kirriwom was given the post-humous award for his outstanding achievements in the legal profession and judiciary, support of DWU as a member of the University Council (2019-2021) and his community engagement activities through initiatives such as environment protection and setting up Tupira Surfing Club in Bogia. Late Justice Kirriwom was a student of Divine Word High School from 1969-1972.

Captain James Makop, who is an overseas-based airline pilot, was recognized for his outstanding achievements in the aviation industry as a pilot in the PNGDF, Air Niugini, Emirates Airways and two international airlines in China where he is now based. Captain Makop was a student of Divine Word High School/Divine Word Institute from 1976 to 1980.

Theresita Kirriwom, daughter of the late Justice Kirriwom spoke to the DWU community via Zoom and expressed her family's gratitude to the University for recognizing him through the Award. Ms Kirriwom said her late dad held DWU dearly to his heart.
