University Of Goroka imposes strict measures after COVID-19 Delta Variant spike

THE University of Goroka (UOG) in Papua New Guinea (PNG)  has imposed strict health safety measures on campus following a spike in Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases, particularly the Delta strain.

Acting vice-chancellor Dr Teng Waninga, in a circular dated Sept 23, directed that no public gatherings should be held on campus and everyone must observe the new normal protocols at all times.

“A sharp increase in the Covid-19 and Delta variant cases is being experienced in Eastern Highlands (now) recognised as a hot spot in PNG,” he said,

“The top management team has had serious discussions with our health team on how UOG should deal with such a serious pandemic.”

Dr Waninga said beds at the Goroka Provincial Hospital were full and it was no longer accepting Covid-19 patients.

He said the hospital did not have sufficient medication and equipment to deal with the high number of patients.

“There will be new measures and controls put in place at the campus to limit any possible spread,” he said.

“Strict protocols of wearing face masks, washing hands and social distancing must be practised in lecture rooms, conference rooms, tutorial rooms, on buses, in the mess, dormitories and there will be no public gatherings or assemblies,” Dr Waninga said.
