THE Port Moresby General Hospital will have a new stand-alone medical university that will specialize in research, teaching and more into specialist medical science studies.
This multi-million facility will be managed and run by the hospital management itself.
Ground works are set to kick-off in 2025.
The major research and teaching facility will also be an independent faculty apart from the University of Papua New Guinea-run School of Medicine and Health Sciences, located close proximity to where the level 6 Specialist Referral general hospital is.
Port Moresby General Hospital's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Paki Molumi said the grand infrastructure master plan will be revealed to the public soon to begin the necessary works.
Dr. Molumi said this was in response to build, increase and upskill the local human resources capacity as well as being innovative and specialized in different aspects in providing premium health care in the country.
He further added that the research center will produce medical practitioners that will be engaged through the provinces to meet growing the demand.
“We are hoping to get a stand-alone Medical Health Science University by 2025,” Dr. Molumi said.
“So, we will be creating all categories and specialist from technicians, physicians, nurses, doctors and not only for Port Moresby General Hospital but for the whole country.
“This is the gold mine of research.
“As we are moving forward in developing the infrastructure, we are taking teaching and research as a very important component because we see that research will drive quality health care.
“Our infrastructure masterplan will come out shortly and training and research is the important component.”
