Sacred Heart Teachers College Plans Major Upgrade for Degree Programs
Papua New Guinea’s Sacred Heart Teachers College in Bomana is gearing up for a major academic shift, with plans to introduce bachelor programs in Primary Teaching and Early Childhood Education by 2027.
Principal Ms. Rose Polume said the institution is ready in terms of human resource capacity but emphasised that infrastructure remains the main hurdle. She said the growing number of lecturers with master’s qualifications has positioned the college well for delivering degree programs.

Ms. Polume said the anticipated upgrade from diploma to bachelor training will demand more classrooms, improved training facilities, and additional housing for students. She highlighted that the college must meet the standards expected of degree-granting institutions across the country.
The principal said enhanced infrastructure will support emerging learning methods, including digital and blended approaches. Welfare facilities, counselling rooms, and research spaces are also part of the broader expansion plan to ensure students receive comprehensive support.
Currently, four staff members are undertaking specialised counselling training at Griffith University through the Australia Awards PNG program, which aims to strengthen mental health and student support services at Sacred Heart.
Ms. Polume acknowledged the assistance the college has received from long-term partners such as JICA, the Australian High Commission, the Kokoda Track Foundation, and local members of parliament. She reminded stakeholders that the college now hosts students from all regions of PNG, not just the Southern Region.
“This is one significant contribution that the Catholic Church offers — working with the national government to provide education, which is a lifelong skill for our people,” she said.
