Fourteen teaching students made history as the pioneer graduates of the Bachelor of Primary and Lower Secondary program. They were part of a broader group of 37 students who completed their studies this year, including graduates in both degree and diploma business programs. The diploma teaching program is now being phased out.
JIHE Council Chairman Joseph Sukwianomb described the graduation as a defining moment for the AOG-run institution, which has grown steadily since its establishment in 2008. “This is a very proud moment for us,” he said. “These are our first pioneer students to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching. It marks a new chapter for JIHE and reflects our determination to contribute meaningfully to education in Papua New Guinea.”
Sukwianomb outlined major developments planned for the years ahead, including the pursuit of full university status, new infrastructure, and a commitment to Early Childhood Education and literacy under the government’s “PNG Reset” priorities. He said the institute is “almost there” in gaining formal recognition from DHERST.
He reminded the graduates of their duty to serve the country with honesty and dedication. “You’re not just mere graduates,” he said. “You are the workforce that must work extra hard to cause the transformation this country aspires to in the next fifty years.” He urged them to “ask not what PNG can do for you, but what you can honestly and truthfully do for PNG.”
