Four School vehicles belonging to University of Natural Resources and Environment at the Vudal Campus in Kokopo, East New Britain were burnt down to ashes in the early hours of this morning by disgruntled students, led by the UNRE Student Representative Council(SRC).

According UNRE SRC President Israel Yafai the student riot came about due to  unresolved issues such as the courses offered by the UNRE not captured by the DHERST especially the new school of Environment and Climate Change, which has resulted in most of the students who keep coming in a self-sponsored.

SRC President Yafai says this issue needs to be sorted out by the school administration.

Mr Yafai claims these issues have been brought to the attention of the school Senior Management Team (SMT) but nothing was done to address their issues, hence the boycott turned riot.

A 25-seater bus, one 15-seater bus, one open back land cruiser, one double cab Toyota Hilux and one motorbike were all burnt down by the students.

East New Britain Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Janarius Vosivai and East New Britain Governor Michael Marum visited the school this morning to address the students.

Meanwhile,  Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources and Member for Gazelle District the  Jelta Wong condemned the rioting.

" It is indeed unfortunate when situations escalate to violence, especially in educational institutions. It is important to address grievances and issues internally before they reach boiling point.

Having a formal process of reporting accusations and conducting investigations can certainly help resolve conflicts and prevent such incidents. This process would allow for a thorough examination of the concerns raised and ensure that appropriate actions are taken. There are much better and peaceful means of solving grievances as educated elites than resorting to violence,  which does not help anyone at all,"  he said.

Minister Wong acknowledged the efforts of the police in responding promptly to quelling the issue.

Their presence and assistance helped restored calm.

" It is disheartening to see the negative impact on parents who work hard to pay for their children's education. It is crucial for students to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by their parents. It is through education and proper channels of communication that we can work towards resolving issues and creating a harmonious learning environment," he said.
