Seven Mandarin students from the University of Goroka (UOG) have successfully completed a two-week cultural exchange program in China. The program offered UOG's Chinese Mandarin students an opportunity to practice their language skills with local Chinese and immerse themselves in Chinese culture. This was the first overseas trip for all seven students, making it a memorable and exciting experience. Through UOG's partnership with BNU, the students engaged in intensive sessions of speaking, reading, and writing Chinese characters and Mandarin language with native speakers.

During their trip, the students spent ten days at the BNU Beijing campus and five days at the BNU Zhuhai campus. Their activities included learning about both modern and traditional Chinese thought, participating in campus discussions, and exploring various cultural sites. “The thing that captured my attention was the diligent movement of these Chinese towards their goal for success. They do things in consideration of time. Everyone was hard working and has respect for each other,” remarked Diana Malisa, one of the participating students.

Nedlyn Pina, another student, shared, “From the vast and rich culture, to the cuisines, to the people, the technologies and the education system had me awestruck and intrigued. Exploring different sites for the first time with a thousand emotions, ideas, and thoughts exploding was truly a remarkable experience.”

Upon their return, the students will have the opportunity to present their experiences from China at the Mark Solon Auditorium (MSA) during the upcoming semester.

The successful trip was made possible through the support of Dr. Teng Waninga, UOG Vice Chancellor, and Dr. Jane Awi, Director of the Confucius Center and Executive Director for the Somare Research Institute at UOG, along with their MOU partner, BNU. Ms. Keko and the students expressed their gratitude for the support and vision that contributed to this significant developmental opportunity.

This cultural exchange program has provided a lifetime experience for the students, inspiring them to pursue their careers and contribute positively to their country.
