In his remarks, Dr. Waninga expressed appreciation for the Ambassador’s visit to the Eastern Highlands province, emphasizing the importance of the relationship between UOG and China. “We are honored that your first visit outside Port Moresby is to the University of Goroka,” said Dr. Waninga.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted UOG’s growth and its unique position as the only teacher-training university in Papua New Guinea and the Southwest Pacific region, with a student population of 6,500 and nearly 500 full-time and casual academic and support staff. Dr. Waninga also acknowledged the strong, growing relationship between UOG and Chinese universities, which began in 2017. He thanked the Chinese government and people for their ongoing support and expressed a desire to further strengthen the partnership.

Ambassador Xiaoguang praised the collaboration between UOG and China, calling it a reflection of the China-PNG Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2018 during President Xi Jinping’s historic visit. Dr. Jane Awi, Executive Director of the Somare Research Institute and Director of the Confucius Education, Culture, and Research Centre, also emphasized the importance of fostering such partnerships in line with UOG’s Corporate and Strategic Plan (2023-2027), which focuses on expanding collaboration and linkages with international institutions.
