PNG Government, Unitech Push Forward With First Aviation Degree Program
PNG is taking a major step toward building its own aviation workforce as the Government collaborates with Unitech and key aviation agencies to deliver the country’s first aviation degree programmes.
The proposed qualifications in aeronautical engineering, aerospace engineering and aviation management aim to address long-standing shortages of Papua New Guinean technical staff across airlines, air navigation services and regulatory bodies. Aviation continues to be vital for the economy, remote access and national integration, making skilled personnel essential to long-term sector stability.
During a presentation on 5 November 2025, Unitech Vice-Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi, Engineering Dean Dr Syed and Dr Khallahle outlined the curriculum to aviation stakeholders. The degrees feature ICAO-aligned coursework, internships, engineering workshops, simulator training and regulatory modules based on relevant ICAO Annexes. Agencies including NAC, NiuSky Pacific, Air Niugini, PNG Air, CASA PNG and the Department of Transport will partner in training and industry attachments.
The programme will be rolled out in three phases: concept formulation and Cabinet submission; accreditation and infrastructure development; and a full launch with scholarships, international cooperation and the first intake of 30–50 students. It also aligns with national policy pillars such as MTDP IV and Vision 2050, emphasising local capability and industry modernisation.
Funding streams under consideration include CADIP III, the Public Investment Programme, bilateral support through the TSSP and ADB-backed education initiatives. The Government is also exploring partnerships with leading aviation institutions in Australia, Singapore, Canada, South Korea, the UAE and Malaysia to ensure global recognition.
A proposal now before national leaders recommends forming an interagency working group to oversee finalisation and implementation, as well as prepare the programme’s budget submission for Cabinet.
“This initiative is timely and critical for meeting our growing aviation workforce needs,” Minister Wake Goi said. “I encourage open dialogue and cooperation among all agencies to ensure we deliver a robust, future-focused academic framework for our young people.”
