A donation from a final-year law student has brought renewed hope to a tourism training school in Central Province, highlighting the impact young professionals can make in their communities.
Marie Jose Laua, studying at the University of Papua New Guinea, donated 100 chairs and several laptops to the Eco Pacific Tourism Institute in Inauaia, Mekeo.

The initiative is aimed at improving facilities and helping students who are working to complete their education through the Technical Vocational Education and Training system.
Ms Laua described the donation as a personal commitment to uplift her home area, drawing from her own journey from village life to university education.
She said her childhood experiences shaped her understanding of inequality in access to education, especially among her peers in the village.
“I remember those games vividly,” she said. “But I also remember that many of the friends I played with did not have the same opportunities to progress through the education system. I felt a responsibility to square that equation.”
Director Alphonse Foimae Junior commended the effort, noting that support from individuals at the start of their professional careers is uncommon but greatly appreciated.
Ms Laua also used the occasion to encourage students to stay focused on their goals and make full use of the resources provided.
“Education is the primary pillar of success. By choosing to be here, you are already thinking positively about your future. Use these resources to build yourselves,” she said.
