The University of Goroka (UoG) in Papua New Guinea is set to introduce its new academic pathway, the 'Three Plus One' program, starting next year, Vice-Chancellor Teng Waninga announced. This new structure will require students to undergo three years of full content study followed by one year focused on education.
"This means each student will undergo three years of full content and one year of education before graduating," Vice-Chancellor Waninga explained. He also emphasized the inclusion of English in the curriculum throughout the four years of study, highlighting the importance of teachers being proficient in writing and speaking English.

The announcement came during the launch of the university's academic programme restructure plan for 2024-2027 on Friday. Waninga noted that students currently enrolled in the existing 'Four Plus One' (4+1) content structure would continue with their program, which will be tailored to meet the needs of schools of excellence, providing them with an additional content advantage.
The academic restructuring is the outcome of an extensive audit conducted by executive deans, department heads, lecturers, and tutors, along with international colleagues from Australia, the United States, and New Zealand. "Our staff, together with colleagues from Australia, the United States, and New Zealand, are helping us audit our programmes," Waninga said. "This programme will be on par with international programmes offered in those countries that are working with us."
This academic audit marks the first comprehensive review since the university's establishment. Waninga elaborated on the goals of the audit, stating, "In the audit, we have looked at what is marketable, what is demanded, and what the country needs from this institution."
The launch event also featured the release of the UoG Academic Audit Reports and the Academic Restructure Plan for 2024-2027. These documents outline the university's strategic approach to enhancing its educational offerings and aligning them with international standards and national requirements.
The introduction of the 'Three Plus One' program pathway represents a significant step in the University of Goroka's ongoing efforts to improve the quality and relevance of its academic programs, ensuring that its graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the education sector in Papua New Guinea and beyond.
